Kids’ Stuff or Serious Business? Odd. How the toys we played with as Children have a second life, and not just as a subject for reminiscing,  but as big business this summer for Cinemas and Movie studios. Featuring GI Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, Captain Future, Masters of the Universe (He-Man, Skelator), Lego…Hell…think there’s even a photo of the Milenium Falcon in there somewhere…

Tomas looks back…

Other films include The Life of David Gale with Kevin Spacey, Disturbia (a Rear Window modernization) , and lastly, the forthcoming (Peter Jackson-produced and spectacular-looking) District 9.

Hollywood and Autism – Episode 5

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

(Tomas’s orginial episode notes)

Every person has it to a certain percentage, and it results, most of the time, in obsessive behaviour out of proportion. It’s the Social-Nerd-”Gene”? Football…Fantasy…Movies…Games…

When crossing this “threshold”, actors often get an Oscar! What they are portraying is the brain development disorder: Autism. A “disorder” characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. It’s there in everyone of us, but there is a point where it goes over the edge.  There a several movies that deal with this topic: I am Sam, Forrest Gump, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Rain Man…

To be honest, I don’t know if one can always draw a sharp line where “normal” stops and a brain disorder starts.  Maybe we are not smart enough to grasp the whole picture. There are various angles to perceive reality.  Getting frustrated by a football team that doesn’t know of your existence is just one.

What is Autism? (National Autistic Society)

One great way to know more about Autism is to follow Talk about Autism (Elena Goodrum) on Twitter. You can find a lot of links to very interesting articles there (including the links between Autism and Extraordinary Ability, Impact of Music on Children with Autism.) Just very interesting in general.
