Comment: On Tyler Brule – What happened to the old video shop? – Episode 40

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Quick one here folks. But a big question:  What happened to the old video shop? Or how the hell do you get films these days?

There’s a whole bunch of ways. Downloads (free or otherwise), Subscription ( You know – getting that scratched up DVD in the post), or fronting up with real cash for a piece of plastic that you’ll watch once and then it ends up taking space on a shelf until your through with it, and then where does it go then? Landfill?

Is the romance gone? What inspires you?  Is there a place (online or off) that’s still got it?

Best video rentals in your neighbourhood? Video rental vs Downloads? Itunes?

Jump in. Get involved. Big up what’s great. Your Country Needs You.

A slightly unconventional episode. But it seemed a fun idea at the time. In the 50s there wasn’t a whole lot of Female Action Stars, now there’s a whole bunch. Big change.

Let us know what you think, or if we’ve missed a stitch…

Featuring Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from Alien, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from Terminator, Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) from Tomb Raider, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) from the Matrix, Alice (Milla Jovovich) from Resident Evil, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) from Underworld, also a glimpse on the new action thriller SALT.

Iconoclasts: The Films That Influenced Star Wars – Episode 38

Friday, November 6th, 2009

As part of our look at various inconoclastic films and the influences that lead to them, here’s a look at some of the films that helped form George Lucas’ Star Wars.

Some great films here: Hidden Fortress directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshirō Mifune, The Searchers (Directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne), The Dam Busters (Directed by Michael Anderson), The Guns of Navarone (Directed Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn ), The silent film Wings (1937), and the 1936 version of Flash Gordon. There’s some great blog posts on this included below that you can check out, as well as Wired Magazine’s chart on how Star Wars influenced the Movie industry in countless ways.

Armchair Traveller: Africa – Episode 37

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Ten minutes of escapism with a look at some great movies set in Africa. Including Out Of Africa, Hotel Rwanda, The Last King Of Scotland, Blood Diamond, No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, and the upcoming (apparently excellent) Endgame, featuring William Hurt.

(With Hotel Rwanda, we have preferred to focus, for this episode, on the story of  Paul Rusesabag rather than the genocide in Rwanda, as that is the human (and inspiring) personal story that begins, and is a central thread,  of this film. It is a brilliant film and strongly recommended.)
