August 6th, 2009
Revenge – Five Minutes of Heaven : An Eternity of Hell.
Tomas takes a look at the revenge theme in films /movies.
Featuring Clips from Kuroneko (Black Cat), Once Upon A Time In The West, The Godfather, Virgin Spring (Ingmar Bergman), Hamlet (Laurence Olivier), and looks at Moby Dick (with Gregory Peck), The Crow, The Brave One, Munich, and Five Minutes of Heaven with Liam Neeson, James Nesbitt, script by Guy Hibbert and direction by Oliver Hirschbiegel. A great film to look out for.

Wow. That looks really well acted. But stop reminding me of all these great young actors that died too soon. Last time it was River Phoenix and now Brandon Lee.
Before nothing I want to congratulate the publisher of the video, I enchant the sequence of initial assembly ahhhhhhh, very good! The audio-visual narrative is improving much chapter to chapter congratulations and but played the minute 01:43 mn the 02:00, breaks the structure that venian working and it makes but separate Brilliant je enriching and graceful!
“The crow” I don’t see. It has the same aesthetic one of Batman at first and seems average imitation, but the maquillaje of the personage always I am called much the attention, I have to see it.
It always asks to me so that the villains in the films of super heroes have that irresistible enchantment that to one as watching one makes wish sometimes that it prevails over its adversary (the good). I cannot then associate the word automatically “revenge” to this type of personage, because if we threw a look to histories passed behind each villain we will see a painful circumstance that I take hide-and-seek to them behind a mask, behind a mask and that is wonderful, but with regard to this has a direct relation with the madness that is not the subject of this chapter.
I believe that the true face of the revenge is not seen better reflected than in “Irreversible” film of Gaspar Noé, film that master in some things and that hatred in others, because it copies the structure who already uses Christopher Nolan in “Memento”, but is reflected of a revenge that leaves bad. Because the revenges are good and never the dot in the Hollywood films thus, in agreement you prune vengarte but soon consequences come and but blood would not clean the spilled blood already, is unreal, but it has as much enchantment the shots, the blood, the brutality, throwing the routine life to the window and giving a jump to the emptiness with the eyes blinded without knowing if there is return! I ask myself perhaps because are that we like so much the films of this type, is the impotence ours before a God that our eyes do not see and in that we must think that it exists when at heart not even we have certainty that we ourself we exist. Horrifying but real.
The final shot (plane?) of “Irreversible” with that indescribable music of Beethoven is… oh my God, to touch the sky (or hell) with the hands. Until today that image it hits to me terribly. The sensation of the time slipping as the life between the hands this very matchlessly counted and that… nor the revenge but does violence to can avoid it.
PS. Gregory Peck much I do not like, I prefer to Clint Eastwood all the life is the best one!
PS 2: Support the black shirts Tomas! (black shirts or smoking in black leather gloves in the hands).
PS 3: That yellow bag of black handles…
@baxtelf: Oh dear. You won’t like the next episode then. Don’t know what it is this week, but maybe it’s because a good friend of mine lost a person very close to them, which made me unconciously select this great young actors (who – as you said – sadly died too soon) because it is a positive reminder for me of how much a person can achieve or influence even in a too-short-time…some achieve more in a short life than most. It makes me try harder and enjoy more. So yeah next episode you might want to skip the beginning and the first movie. I can send you the time code once it’s all edited
I thought The Brave One was pretty bad, actually. It makes sense that it wanted to take itself seriously, but something about the way it went about that…I don’t know, the film just didn’t come together for me.
I know Oldboy was already mentioned in the Korean Movies episode, but I feel like it should be mentioned here too. Oldboy! Good revenge film, turning the whole thing on its head. Juli mentioned Memento, which is another good one that plays with the idea.
Munich and The Crow are still on my infinitely long list of films to see.
Just wanted to add that in none of the movies, I have chosen for this episode, Revenge leads to a happier life. The main charcters become somewhat outsiders, alienating themselves from society…which catalyses the feeling of emptiness. It’s good in movies because it let’s you experience the feeling without executing it yourself but lay it in the hands of blind-folded Justitia.
@Juli: thanks for the comments on our ‘improvement’ editing wise. The yellow bag is very shy but maybe we can interview it for you some day
@CJ: The Brave One is alright. I Liked the acting between Jodie F. and Terrence H., where both know that they are lying and that the other one is too…but it’s agood one for a DVD night. Yeah Oldboy, was cursing myself for using that one in an earlier episode but the director Park Chan-Wook made a whole revenge triology…they are all bit tough but it actually shows quite well how far you have to be willing to go for the whole nine yards if you really would wanted an eye for an eye.
I agree with CJ on ” The brave” I think the same although that only has some very interesting “shots” (takes?).
But ” Old boy” chan… je je better I don`t comments, I do not want to fight anybody, is a little commercial I feel, it I do not share it. It begins very well but quickly it falls.
Yellow interview to stock-market????? ja ja I die of an infarct please I want that it counts its truth, that it has something in its interior, I am not created the one of “a simple bag of market” ; by something is yellow and nonbrown, and even more showy, the black handles that seem ropes, if… like those of Alfred.
@Tomas: With The Brave One, I think the problem for me was the fact that it couldn’t decide whether it was a DVD night action flick, which is what we’d rented it for, or something more sober. It sort of seemed like it was trying to set things up as if it was going to deal with some pretty tough subjects and make a realistic go of it, which I wouldn’t have minded even though I wasn’t expecting it, but then it kept slipping into pulpy moments like a regular exploitation revenge film, and it just came off as…confused. Weird and uncomfortable in a way that didn’t even seem to be the point. Maybe Foster’s portrayal was just too realistic to fit into the revenge trajectory that the film was going for; I don’t know. But even the assault scene, which I understand had to be traumatic, just felt over the top, given that pulpy edge…too forced as a moment of horror. It just rubbed me up the wrong way.
Oldboy, on the other hand, was fantastic. It knew exactly what it was trying to be and gave us something tough, genuinely disturbing and at times very funny. The character stumbles gruffly along the path of vengeance and through typical exploitative moments with what feels like completely believable behaviour for his character. That prolongued corridor fight is brilliant.
The hypnosis stuff did feel a bit dubious and a bit contrived, but that’s a minor complaint. I really want to see the other two films in that trilogy, but I haven’t got round to it yet.
@Juli: We’ll see what we can do
But forced of ” The Brave One” is the final decision of Terrence Howard hide-and-seek the dirt under the “closet” to save to his “vindictive woman”.
Squid in the mouth for ” Oldboy” ja ja
I want to see that interview ja ja, bah unless it is something enigmatic :=0 and does not want to be seen, in that case I can lend a mask to him of video if it serves to him I do not believe that it is of its stature perhaps but it serves ja ja
hi Tomas,5 minutes of heaven is not a thing that you could expect for but the good thing in here is that the movie gives you a moral lesson and values which you could apply for yourself and in general..society has a big role for molding people like ‘ALISTAIR’,(Liam Neeson),very much impulsive and determined to kill someone..in other way around ‘JOE’(James Nesbitt)who played wonderfully in his character, has been truamatized with his brothers killing and he’s been haunting with his mothers words for over 33 years by blaming why he didn’t do anything with his brothers killers at least by smashing a bottle….anyway, the damage has been done,no point of returning back.. there’s a saying’ the regrets has always at the end’..but you have to live your life the most out of it..
one thing that i like with ‘5 minutes of heaven’, the revenge is didn’t push through..thats why we need to learn to “forget and forgive” though sometimes it hurts the mind and body are not willing to do so but in the end you feel vindicated… fighting!
“Five Minutes of Heaven” remember me has to the film “The Limey” (Steven Soderbergh), the argument is the same, is less violent. The violence this practically elipse even has a treatment of very particular assembly that makes of a film but a good film.
@athenayesha: so out of 5 otters (with 5 being the best) would you give this movie?
hi tomas, is this a title of a movie?
“Cause love, like an invisible bullet, has shot me down and I’m bleeding – yeah I’m bleeding. And if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me.”
Oh, my God my favorite song. Just it was listening to ” There`s only me” and flashee a terrible and beautiful history, perhaps makes the video also, but with dolls, or actors… not, hatred to the actors lately.
@athenayesha: hahaha. no it’s a new movie rating I just thought of, so if it is the ebst movie ever it gets 5 otters and if it’s the worst ever it gets 0 otters. I like otters!
ah i see.. so im this kind of innocent fella.. hahaha.. im laughing out loud now.. ok ok ok, im going to give 3 not bad.. ah, it seems you like otters a lot…
anyway, belated happy birthday..the greeting’s too late but its better than never…hahaha..signing off, today is saturday, the time is 2:38 am here..
Wicked, brilliant, awesome, magnificent.
I have found that revenge has its upsides and its downsides, just like all things. If one wishes to seek vengeance, it can be for both good and bad reasons. Yin and yang.
Seeking revenge can spurn more revenge, it makes the person just as bad as the other for doing so. But standing there and doing nothing about it could provoke whoever is doing it to continue doing so.
I guess it depends on the situation really.
Five minutes of heaven looks good, I must go see that. The brave one, also very good, I think rage and hate towards both criminals and the police fuelled her goal of vengeance, however it did leave her knowing her boyfriends murderers are dead and cannot hurt anyone else.
The crow, Brandon Less last film I think. A good film, at points I was bored, but that was a while ago, i look back at it now and find it to be very unique. Its sad that it was however Brandon less last film.
This was wicked Tomas, cant wait for the next Ep dude. Keep it up.
Ethan
@athenayesha: thanks for bday wish and the rating!
@Ethan: thx for your kind words rocka! Athenayesha gave Five Minutse of heaven 3 otters (out of 5) and CJ wasn’t quite convinced by The Brave One (didn’t ask him for an otter rating though). Would be interesting to get your thoughts and otter score (5 otters is the best mark). Finally, I absolutely agree that revenge is a two sided blade but as a society we should try to leave it in the hands of justice (higher authority) to take care of business otherwise, as you and many others pointed out, we’re back in the wild west. Sometimes it might be hard though…
2 otters. I’d give it one and a half, but a half-otter would be SICK.
hi tomas,very well said..
by the way,il try to watch’ brave one’ tomorrow..so that i can laydown my views also..
All too true. Although, on the brave one for example, the police can do little without breaking the law themselves. But without them we would, like you said, be back in the wild west.
WARNING I MAY SPOIL THESE FILMS FOR YOU. ITS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU WATCH THEM BEFORE READING MY REVIEW.
The Crow:
3 Otters
A classic. However it didnt get me going all to much throughout the film, and at some points I was confused, but overall, it is quite stylish and unique, and the symbolism behind it is quite well done.
The Brave One:
3 Otters
Great story line, but I feel the director focused more on the action and klling, rather than psychological and emotional part which made her do what she does. other than that, I feel it was fairly well done, but that its promoting the idea that Revenge is the way to go. because the police dont really do much, and the detective actually helps her in the end.
Munich
4 otters
Very good story, Eric Banna was superb throughout it. A very good Action/ politcal thriller that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The director really captures the emotions of the Israeli team and even that of the Palestinian terrorists. Its shows that, when people do something horrific, and you just stand there, it, like I said before, invites them to continue doing so. However the Palestinians werent doing it our of revenge they were doing it for sovreign indpendance. I feel that the Israelis somewhat deserved it, but that the Palestinians went to far.
Five Minutes of Heaven:
From what I have seen, 3 otters
Although i have not seen this movie, from what was on the preview, it seemed to go into great depth of what revenge can do to people, and how it can affect peoples lives, as we see with the fella that wants to kill Liam Neesons character. But that short preview got me. So I will post a review when i see it.
Hope this wasnt too long haha. Im a big film Buff.
Thanks again
Ethan
Thanks to @Ethan, @athenayesha and @CJ. Not only for taking the time to otter the movies but also to help others to make up there mind. Good otters share! (PS: CJ is absolutely right no slcing of otters into pieces).
It is all good, its good to finally have a place where I can discuss movies which isnt overrun with smart ass americans who do nothing but get smart to you.
So thankyou Tomas!
A shining dead that I wait for God has in the glory is Kurt Cobain, a kiss from breadfruit.
Kurt Cobain? One cool dude. I Quite like Nirvana, however, their songs are all to similiar. In the sense that they all sound completely baked beyond reality.
But yet, considering, the music they produced was still quite good.
hi tomas,i’l give ‘the brave one’ 4 otters… firstly, its kinda sad to be in her situation .. what else could you do if someone assaulted you? if there’s no way around ,you have no choice but to fight back..secondly, don’t put law in your hands just leave it to the higher authority..lastly,i was thrilled with the ending.. oh i love the ending actually (to cover up a person who are seeking revenge)..
Cheers Athenayesha for your rating! Glad you had a good time.
oh tomas i feel like this is a homework to me.. that’s why i can’t wait to have another reviews… you know, its a process of learning new things by exchanging ideas..thanks to the otters anyway..at least i know(before) what an otter looks like…hahaha..,
by the way, is this your way waking up early in the morning?when i saw the time its like, its too early for you to wake up.. oh,don’t mind me…
@athenayesha: i am really excited by the idea of all of us exchanging thoughts and opinion and stop wasting time of our lifes with ‘useless’ movies but enjoy the pleasant ones. I am up earlier but my brain needs a while to work
@Ethan: What but master of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain is the musical emotional honesty with which they they created. They did not sound to forced, sounded from inside, deeply real. Lack of feeling is what as much critical to the present art generally, at least that one that arrives at tv, from the cinema to music. It has before and later after Kurt, doubtlessly.
Nirvana: 5 Otters ja ja
@Tomas: Why otters and not another thing?
Rob Dougan: 10 Otters ja ja
I want my chapter 12! where this? it prepares mate to me, everything, and ja ja is not 12 chapter!! ja
Oh God, I am a little crazy today ja ja (bah, always)
Nothing, wait for chapter 12 with anxieties!
@Juli: Otters crack shells open on their belly while lying on the back with a stone on their belly and trying to crack their food open by smashing it on the stone. That’s what we do cracking up films and go to the inside…naw, honestly I just like otters. I will put up a note on facebook fanpage about episode 12
@Tomas: You know that I thought about the otters? By the position of that you speak I have the image of “spectator passive” , with passive spectator I talk about to whom this wire drawing eating popcorn watching the film to only happen through entertainment. But of there the eyes of that watch not? ja ja, each crazy person with its world. Interesting, but that does not excuse chapter 12, I want my chapter 12 now!! ja ja
(and I don`t forget to me stock-market yellow )
Yes, Rob Dougan, 100 otters!
Otters are pretty cool, but I reckon Ocelots are pretty wicked… can i use Ocelots Tomas?
Ethan you can use Ocelots, Kangeroos, Amoebas, Pigeons or Steaks. Other people might not understand your rating since the otter one is finely balanced and very complex.
hi tomas, can you read this phrases for me?i need your violent reaction..you can email me…thanks..

@ Rob: Last night I thinking to about which feel ignores. About your “new songs”. Perhaps it is a stupidity of my part to comment it but… It must be the terror of any artist not to be able to surpass itself and in that context I say “If the feeling is honest cannot be bad” but quite the opposite.
The fear this but like everything, the time happens and the people change. Sometimes they do not change but it is not necessary to fear to him to the change because that is called evolution and if nonevolucionaramos seriamos primates. Ironically the best works usually are less waited for, and with “the art it must make people happy” I talk about the own artist, since the receiver can or not be the same or simply not to be, to disappear. Poor man Vincent van Gogh that I finish dead in placard, but I believe that is the eternal fight of the artist, “to create or to burst”.
Without fear Rob, you don`t remain in closet.
The time happens for all.
I am sure that new disc will be great.
@Tomas: Thanks for the space!
